Movin’ on up: River Park is Business of the Month 

With hardwood floors, soaker tubs, high-end appliances and cabinetry, the furnishings at River Park Apartments offer the kind of comforts that could be found in some of the newest and nicest homes around — without an enormous mortgage.

The apartments on Parklane Road opened in 2015 and have been a reliable source for housing for the local workforce and commuters alike, which is one of the reasons it was selected as the Pike County Chamber of Commerce’s Business of the Month.

“There’s a few that have been here since it opened,” apartment manager Kelli Buckles said of River Park’s residents, the majority of which she described as “younger, middle-aged professionals.”

“With the hospital having the residency programs, a lot of those (doctors) will come in and move in. We get a lot of med students from the hospital,” she said. “We have a lot of people straight out of college. This will be their first spot. I think it’s a good starting point, for sure.”

Buckles is well familiar with the property, not only because of her job title but also because she lived there for six years.

River Park has about 300 residents living in the 192-unit complex that features 72 one-bed room units, 108 two-bedroom units and 12 three-bedrooms units, with rent ranging from $1,115 for one bedroom to $1,425 for three. The rent includes water, sewer, trash collection and pest control, so residents only have to pay for electricity and internet, Buckles said.

The units have five different floor plans. Buckles said third-floor apartments have taller ceilings that are vaulted.

“It’s super nice,” she said.

Buckles said she enjoyed getting to know the residents both as the manager and as a resident.

“They know a manager in an office, but when you see them outside they feel more comfortable talking to you. You make a lot more relationships,” she said.

Besides the furnishings, River Park’s 24-hour gym, business center and swimming pool enhance residents’ comfort.

Cypress Communities of Metairie, La., owns River Park, which is one of about a dozen apartment complexes that the company manages, with the others being in the New Orleans area, Baton Rouge and on the Mississippi Gulf Coast.

Buckles, whose husband works for the Pike County Sheriff’s Department, noted that other deputies and McComb police officers live in the apartment complex and provide security.

New residents must undergo background and credit checks, which Buckles said is a common practice.

And despite the large population density that River Park has, Buckles said the atmosphere is nice and quiet, and residents are able to keep to themselves.

“It’s quiet around here,” she said.
